Palma de Mallorca

Enjoy the year-long mild climate

Palma is a vibrant place and a world away from the heaving tourist enclaves of the surrounding bay.

MSC Cruises shore excursions can be a clever option to enjoy Palma. Finding your way around Palma is fairly straightforward once you’re in the city centre. The obvious landmark to see in Palma on your cruise holiday is the Catedral, which dominates the Mediterranean Sea waterfront and backs onto the oldest part of the city, a cluster of alleys and narrow lanes whose northern and eastern limits are marked by the zigzag of avenues built beside – or in place of – the city walls.

Five hundred years in the making, Palma’s Catedral is a magnificent building and a surprising one, too, with its interior featuring modernista touches designed by Antoni Gaudí. The original church was built following the Christian reconquest of the city, and the site taken, in fulfilment of a vow by Jaume I, was that of the Moorish Great Mosque. Essentially Gothic, with massive exterior buttresses to take the weight off the pillars within, the church derives its effect through its sheer height, impressive from any angle but startling when glimpsed from the waterside esplanade.

Opposite the cathedral entrance stands the Palau de l’Almudaina, originally the palace of the Moorish walis (governors) and later of the Mallorcan kings. The interior has been painstakingly restored, but its rabbit warren of rooms and corridors has been left comparatively bare, the main decorative highlight being a handful of admirable Flemish tapestries, each devoted to classical themes.

With an MSC excursion, you can catch a boat across from Sant Elm’s minuscule harbour to the austere offshore islet of Sa Dragonera, an uninhabited chunk of rock some 4km long and 700m wide, with an imposing ridge of sea cliffs dominating its north-western shore.

  • HIGHLIGHTS OF PALMA & FLAMENCO SHOW AT SON AMAR

    PMI19

This tour discovers Palma and Mallorca, a land rich in natural beauty, cultural heritage, and traditions with ancient Arab influences. Upon leaving the port, our sightseeing tour visits the most iconic buildings of the city of Palma: the Palace of Almundaina, La Lonja (the old town), and the majestic Cathedral. Then it is time to travel on to the manorial estate of Son Amar. Son Amar is a traditional 16th-century Mallorca manor house with a fascinating story to tell. It is found in the foothills of the UNESCO World Heritage site, the beautiful Sierra de Tramuntana. Prepare to be whisked away to an era of romance and chivalry when you arrive at Son Amar. Wander through a marketplace offering traditional Mallorcan artisan produce, where you can buy a souvenir to remind you of your visit to the island. You will arrive at the state of the art theatre that is at the heart of this beautiful place. It is here that you will taste a local sweet cake and sip some refreshing sangria as you watch a breathtaking performance of flamenco. The show transports us to the world where Flamenco was born. The finale to the tour and the performance is, as expected of this world-famous Son Amar show, breathtaking and unforgettable. Please note: depending on the time in port, this tour may be either a day or a night tour.

  • DRAGON’ S CAVES & PEARL FACTORY

    NATURLIGE UNDERVÆRKER

    PMI02

Speleology is the study of caves and all those with a keen interest in geology and natural phenomena will be bowled over by what is one of the world’s most interesting cave complexes created by the erosion of the sea. At 2 km long, the caves feature a series of lakes, including Martel Lake, the biggest underground lake on Earth. The atmospheric mood will be heightened by a memorable concert staged on small boats. Back above ground, we will have time to visit the Pearl Factory before returning to the ship. • SÓLLER AND VINTAGE TRAIN RIDE

    NATURSKØNNE VEJE

    PMI28

A scenic coach ride, a vintage train and a valley town are all things you will get to experience on this enjoyable half-day tour, which begins with a 1.5-hour drive from Palma to Sóller. Beautifully situated in a bowl-shaped valley with a mountainous backdrop, this bustling town is particularly noted for its lovely buildings – constructed by former emigrants returning from France – and the Church of Saint Bartholomew. Directly adjacent to this church stands the Banco de Sóller, constructed in Modernisme style in 1912 and designed by the architect and former Gaudí pupil, Joan Rubió i Bellver. And Sóller also boasts two vintage modes of public transport, the first of which is the wonderfully quaint Tranvía de Sóller tramline that has linked the valley town with the nearby Port of Sóller since 1913. The second of these – and your ride for the first hour of the route home – is the equally old-fashioned electric narrow-gauge Ferrocarril de Sóller train. Have your camera poised to capture gorgeous views during the ride, which includes viaducts, several tunnels and the most glorious orange groves. You will be getting off at the Son Reus station, where a coach will be waiting for the final part of the pleasant journey back to the port and your ship. Please note: the order of the tour may be reversed to accommodate train availability. This tour is not suitable for guests with mobility problems or using a wheelchair.

The tour continues on through the picturesque lanes of the old quarter en route to a 17th-century building with large old doors, behind which lies the wonderful Abaco Bar. This is where you will enjoy a cocktail in an exclusive courtyard setting, opulently styled with birdcages, candles, fountains and piles of fruit. • NORTH COAST, SAN MARROIG AND WINE TASTING IN SON BOSCH

    NOGET SÆRLIGT

    PMI29

In contrast to the sandy beaches for which the island is commonly known, Mallorca’s northern coastline is characterised by craggy limestone cliffs that have provided protection against the elements and invasions for centuries. Among the pretty coastal spots to discover is Son Marroig, the residence of Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria from the outgoing 19th century until the outbreak of WWI. Founded in 1927, the private House Museum of Son Marroig continues to preserve the Archduke’s legacy, which includes having championed the island’s flora and fauna at a time when such matters commanded little interest. A tour of the gardens will include a look at a vast cistern commissioned by the Archduke and an Ionic temple made of Carrara marble at the “Des Galliner” mirador. This lookout point affords unfettered views of the Na Foradada headland and the Mediterranean coastline. You will then move on to the lovely Finca Son Bosch for a flavoursome treat, a tasting session involving three different wines, fresh bread, ripe olives and aromatic olive oil. Fully rested and restored, you will then return to the pier and your ship. Please note: guests using a wheelchair are advised that they must be accompanied by a paying helper to provide assistance with getting on and off the coach and that wheelchairs must be collapsible/foldable since the coach has neither a ramp nor a lift. Guests using a wheelchair who would like to participate in this tour are requested to contact the Shore Excursions’ Desk promptly once they are on board so that arrangements can be made. Please note that the upper floor of San Marriog Museum is not wheelchair accessible.

Spain

Love at first sight
Love at first sight

If you’re visiting Spain for the first time, be warned: this is a country that fast becomes an addiction. You might intend to come just for a cruise holiday, a walking tour or a city break, but before you know it you’ll find yourself hooked by something quite different – the celebration of some local fiesta, perhaps, or the otherworldly architecture of Barcelona.

Even in the most over-touristic Mediterranean resorts of the Costa del Sol, you’ll be able to find an authentic bar or restaurant where the locals eat, and a village not far away where an age-old bullfighting tradition owes nothing to tourism.

A holiday to Spain can also show you the large cities of the north like Barcelona, which have reinvented themselves as essential cultural destinations (and don’t all close down for hours for a kip every afternoon).

And when the world now looks to Spain for culinary inspiration – the country has some of the most acclaimed chefs and innovative restaurants in the world – it’s clear that things have changed. Spain, despite the current economic uncertainty, sees itself very differently from a generation ago.

So should you – prepare to be surprised.
