MSC Cruises, from January 1st, 2020, invests in a range of carbon offset projects and doesn’t carry forward the cost to its Guests.
Carbon offset projects seek to support initiatives across the globe that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as forest protection or investment in renewable energy projects.

Our long-term goal
Carbon offsetting is a key milestone in MSC Cruises’ sustainability journey but this is a temporary solution to bridge the gap between our long-term goal to achieve zero emissions. Even today’s most advanced technologies are not able to match our goal, which is why MSC Cruises continues to invest in the development of the technology that will eventually allow to meet this objective.

Discover our progress for the environmental stewardship
MSC Grandiosa, launched in October 2019, raises the bar in environmental performance and is fitted with state-of-the-art emissions control technologies:
- MSC Grandiosa is the first ship in the company fleet to feature a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, which reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by 80%
- All future ships will be equipped with this technology too
- In addition, the ship has a hybrid Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) to reduce sulphur emissions by 97%
- All new ships will be equipped with these systems and longer-serving ships that don’t have it yet, will be retrofitted, no later than 2023
- LNG is arguably the cleanest marine fuel and reduces sulphur emission by 99%, nitrogen oxide emissions by 85%, and CO2 emissions by 20%
