Nothing can prepare you for the amazing richness of the marine environment that surrounds it – and in particular the southern right whales which migrate here every year to swim in the waters off the town of Puerto Pirámides – nor for the immense colonies of animals living on the Peninsula’s steep, crumbly cliffs. Punta Tombo is home to the continent's largest colonyof penguins; the noise produced by the black and white Magellanic penguins is deafening, but walking through this avian metropolis, surrounded by the strangest sounds and tottering birds is a unique experience.
